Marc Hirner

Dr Marc Hirner is a consultant orthopaedic surgeon based in Northland, New Zealand, specialising in shoulder and knee reconstruction. He is Chairman of Southern Cross Northland Surgical Centre, President of the New Zealand Shoulder and Elbow Society (NZSES), a board member of the Asia-Pacific Shoulder and Elbow Society (ACASEA), and a consultant at the Auckland Bioengineering Institute. 

Marc was the first surgeon in New Zealand to perform a robotic shoulder replacement and pioneered the Posterior Condyle Method for robotic total knee arthroplasty, restoring constitutional alignment and joint line obliquity. He was awarded the Grammont Award for his research in shoulder surgery. His major research interests include reverse shoulder arthroplasty biomechanics, the use of artificial intelligence in arthroplasty planning, surgical execution, patient referral and triage. 


Alex Malone

Alex Malone is an Orthopaedic Surgeon in Christchurch, New Zealand. He specialises in Upper Limb Surgery (Shoulder and Elbow). He has worked in New Zealand since 2008 after Orthopaedic training in the UK and Fellowships in London, Auckland, Sydney and USA.

He is a Senior Clinical Lecturer in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery and Musculoskeletal Medicine, University of Otago and directs the Christchurch Upper Limb Fellowship Program.

Alex was President of the New Zealand Shoulder and Elbow Society from 2021 to 2023, Chair of the New Zealand Orthopaedic Association ACC / Third Party Liaison Committee and a member of the NZOA Council.

His research interests include Acromioclavicular Joint Injury, Clavicle Osteotomy, Shoulder Arthroplasty and Shoulder Scoring Tools.

He is married to Charlotte, and they have 3 children – Oscar, Chloe and Eve.
